Brief
In this lab, I was tasked with taking studio photographs of products from two start up companies, retouching the photographs and creating posters out of them.
The products were the 'Jah Drop Sweets' from Jah Drops and 'The Twins' furniture collection from Marta Abello.
Raw Photographs
I began by photographing each of the products. Below are the 4 photographs which i'll be moving forward with to retouch.
Retouching the Photographs
I began editing the them by adjusting things like exposure, contrast, temperature and saturation. For each of these photos I used layer masks in order to remove detail in the black backdrops of each of the photographs. I then added adjustment layers to further adjust the saturation on both images.
I then went on to edit the images of Marta Abello's Twins furniture collection. Below are both of the edited photographs.
For the bottom photograph, I began by cropping it to an appropriate size, as the original photo showed the back drop all the way to its edges. I didn't have to crop the other one as the back drop wasn't seen as much.
Similarly to before, I began by adjusting both photos' exposure, contrast, temperature and saturation. I also increased the clarity on both images in order to bring out more of the texture in the wood grain of the furniture.
For the top image, I mostly tried to adjust the settings in order to emphasise the colours made by the light gels in the original photograph.
In making this poster, I wanted to try and achieve a minimalist look. I started by masking out the background of one of the edits and put it on a custom background. The background is made up of a navy blue which I chose as it is a contrasting colour to that of the mostly orange/brown looking furniture. Also, the background has an off white colour which I sampled from the backdrop of the original edit. I also, took the shape of the furniture pieces and created a Gaussian blur at low opacity. I put the shape behind the furniture for a shadow effect to give the poster some depth.

In making the poster for the jah drops, I found it more difficult to come up with good ideas as the company doesn't have any existing branding to work off of.
In the end I chose to just present one of my edited photographs alongside some typography with a handwritten flowing font. This ties in to the fact that the jah drop sweets are handmade themselves.
